Children’s Dentistry

Children’s Dentistry is a very important part of what we do here at Don Mills-Eglinton Dental Centre. We recommend that children come in for their first visit between 2-3 years of age. We often find that a “show and tell” visit is ideal for kids to have a positive dental health experience free of anxiety and dental fear. At this appointment they get to watch their parents have their teeth cleaned, sit at the chair and perhaps undergo a visual examination if they feel comfortable.

Preventative fluorides and dental sealants can help your children remain cavity free. However, proper oral hygiene along with diet and nutrition, play an equally important role in oral health. At Don Mills-Eglinton Dental Centre, we teach and involve your children so that they can grow cavity-free and keep their teeth cavity-free for a lifetime.

Of particular interest to parents would be

the following children’s dentistry services:

Cavity Prevention Program

Early Orthodontic Treatment

Dental Sealants

Educational Children’s Program

Mouthguards or Sportguards

Cleanings and Check Ups

Good oral hygiene is important, not only for looks, but for general health as well. Poor oral hygiene can lead to a variety of dental and medical problems such as gum disease, infection, bone loss, heart disease, strokes and more. Regular cleanings can prevent bad breath, gum diseases and oral cancer. During a cleaning we can detect potential tooth problems, as well as create a treatment plan to restore your smile to a functional, healthy and beautiful state.

At Don Mills-Eglinton Dental Centre, we recommend regular dental check-ups every 6-12 months to maintain a healthy smile. For some, healthy gums can be maintained by a polishing of teeth by one of our certified dental hygienists; for others, long term periodontal health can only be maintained by specialized deep cleanings at 3-4 month intervals.

Digital X-Rays

Faster and safer digital X-rays for children & adults

Digital imaging, or X-Rays, produces a high-resolution image of your teeth, bones, and surrounding soft tissues to screen for and help identify problems with the teeth, mouth, and jaw. Digital X-rays require a minimal exposure time and therefore reduce radiation exposure by up to 90 percent. The images are displayed on a computer screen in a few moments; there is no waiting for a film to be developed to produce this image.

Root Canal Therapy

Contrary to popular belief, root canal therapy doesn’t cause pain, it actually relieves it! Advances in dental technology have made this virtually a pain-free experience.

Saving your tooth is a better choice than extracting it! Keeping your tooth helps to prevent your other teeth from drifting out of line and causing jaw or bite problems. Saving a natural tooth avoids having to replace it with an artificial tooth.

Common symptoms of a root canal infection include:

Sharp, acute and intense pain

Dull ache and pressure

Sharp pain when biting down

Tenderness and swelling in the nearby gums

Lingering pain after eating hot or cold foods

Laser Gum Disease Treatments

Gum disease can be treated in many different ways, depending on the severity of the disease.

Treatment Of Gingivitis

Gingivitis is an infection and an inflammation of the gums in the beginning stage. It manifests itself by bleeding gums, but without reaching the bone that supports the teeth. Without proper care and treatment, this can lead to Peridontitis, also known as Gum Disease.

Gingivitis can be treated by:

  • Rigorous oral hygiene at home, including brushing regularly and flossing at least once a day. Rinsing with salt water or a disinfectant solution (Chlorhexidine, Listerine, etc.) can also be recommended.
  • A dental cleaning, including tartar removal every six months to eliminate the plaque and tartar.

Treatment Of Periodontitis

Periodontitis is a more advanced infection of the gums. It manifests itself not only with bleeding gums, but also with teeth that move slightly or severely, bad breath, and periodontal pockets (a deep space between the tooth and the gum).

Gum Disease can be treated by:

  • Scaling and root planning, which is a non-surgical procedure of tartar removal and deep cleaning done under local anesthesia. The scaling allows removing all the tartar that is located over and under the gum line. The root planning makes the tooth smooth and free of bacterial debris and diseased tissues.

The success rate of periodontal treatments is influenced by:

Smoking that significantly slows down the healing of the gums.

Good oral hygiene at home, including brushing and flossing.

Tartar removal and cleanings at the dentist every three to four months.
